Printing A New Way To Success

Date: January 05, 2012

3D Printers and 3D Laser Scanners have revolutionized the prototyping industry. Prototypes that used to take ample effort and time are now accurately and finely finished (and ready to use) in just a few hours at a low cost.

Rather than cutting prototypes from materials that are difficult to work with, like metal or wood, 3D Printing is an additive process. What this means is that layer by layer, your prototype is built – 16 to 28 microns at a time. In the past, if a material was to be sculpted into a prototype, material was manually subtracted – a time consuming process. On top of this, if too much material was removed, the prototype had to be scrapped. “We make many of our finished parts using injection molding,” explains Randy Betz, Senior Scientist at Access. “For years, we used SLS to make the molds—the quality was good, but the process took days or even weeks. More and more often, we didn’t have that kind of time. I was looking for a faster alternative.”

Before 3D Printing, there are two options to create a customized 3D Prototype. The first is through the use of a 3D Laser Scanner. Your model is scanned by a state-of-the-art laser scanner which produces a CAD file of your prototype. From here, using a process called reverse engineering; you can edit your model any way you please. Any detail can be adjusted or altered, including the type of finish for your project. Reverse engineering condenses research and development time and cost significantly. The end result is a durable, ready to use prototype. The second option is using 3D prototyping software. 3D Printers Canada offers customers complete assistance through all aspects of their prototyping journey. 3D Printers Canada will help you install the equipment, train you and provides constant, quality customer service. By supplying STL and CAD files, 3D Printers Canada can provide you with an accurate quote for your prototype.

Any business (or individual) that uses CAD files can benefit from 3D Printing in a big way. Wohlers Associates, a research firm specializing in the rapid prototyping and additive manufacturing markets, reported that spending on additive manufacturing systems (3D printers) totalled over $1 billion in 2009 with an expected growth of close to $1.2 billion in 2011. This shows that the market is valuing this technology more and more.

Society has taken notice as well. In a recent Toronto Star report on 3D Printing, business reporter Francine Kopun reported that, “they (3D Printers) will one day be used in ordinary homes.”  According to the article, individual inventors have purchased Objet printers and laser scanners and have began to

work in secrecy on their ideas.

One thing is for certain: in a time of economic uncertainty, while many businesses and markets are struggling, the 3D Printing and especially rapid prototyping business is growing and is as strong as ever.

“Many companies can save tens of thousands of dollars and cut months off product development and delivery times by moving to rapid prototyping and rapid manufacturing techniques,” says Jon Fawcett, Manager of Fawcett Design. Also, Rapidform, a 3D Printing and 3D Scanning Software company has recently followed up their most successful year ever with a 38 per cent increase in revenue as they have found more manufactures have adopted 3D rapid prototyping technologies.
