The 3D Printing Industry is Growing at an Exponential Rate

Date: February 01, 2012

If 3D Printing grows at the same rate 2D Printing did, we will be able to print cars by 2080.

At its current growth rate, we will be able to print our own cars much sooner than that.

It took a mere 40-years for the original printing press to transform from the simple Gutenberg press to become a mass production tool across Europe. It took even less time for computers to progress from huge, room-sized machines to miniscule chips. Advances, such as in-home do it yourself printers and websites that allow you to design, share and improve 3D CAD files, significantly reduce the time that major developments are made in the 3D Printing industry.

The first 3D Printers were made widely available in the 1980’s. They were considered the first wave of Rapid Prototyping machines. From room sized computers that could only calculate simple arithmetic to the blinding speed of nanoprocessors, one can see how 3D Printing is evolving now at an absolutely volatile, enormous rate.

In a November 2011 Toronto Star report on 3D printing, business reporter Francine Kopun reported that, “they (3D printers) will one day be used in ordinary homes.”  According to the Kopun, inventors have purchased Objet printers and laser scanners and have began to work in secrecy on their ideas, keeping their ideas within their own four walls (rather than outsourcing).

One thing seems certain: in a time of economic ambiguity, with many businesses and markets struggling, the 3D Printing and especially Rapid Prototyping industries are growing and is as strong as ever. Layer by layer.

“Many companies can save tens of thousands of dollars and cut months off product development and delivery times by moving to rapid prototyping and rapid manufacturing techniques,” says Jon Fawcett, Manager of Fawcett Design.
