A Clear Cut Advantage in Dentistry and Orthodontics

Date: January 18, 2012

By digitizing dentistry and orthodontics, Objet and 3D Printers Canada have revolutionized the dental industry.

With its industry leading capabilities, 3D Printers Canada is able to print both flexible and rigid materials at the same time, in the same product. For example, if prototyping a human jaw line, tissues and bone can easily be distinguished by different materials (that have different flexibilities and appearnece). This advanced technology gives its user a more advanced mode through all stages of dental and orthodontic research and development.

In both the dental industry, models of teeth and jaw lines are accurately reproduced to create life-sized, accurate (within 16 microns) replicas that are used as surgical guidelines. As discussed before, the ability to print materials with different compositions (ie. flexible and rigid) creates a more customized prototype. Fillings, crowns, body parts or any other dental or orthodontic aspect can be recreated and printed in any model.

“Choosing the right equipment to get the best return on investment is not trivial,” explains Avi Cohen, Head of Medical Solutions at Objet. “Objet enables dental practitioners to reap the maximum benefits from the digital dentistry era, which is exactly what we’ll be demonstrating at the International Dental Expo Rome."

The right equipment alluded to by Avi Cohen is the new Bio-Compatible 3D printing material (MED610™). This new material gives any dental prototyping a unique and clear cut advantage over any previous substances. The MED610TM is a clear, stable and bi-compatible, which makes it especially useful in PMMA simulation and almost any other dental or orthodontic solution.

“Objet invests significantly in R&D in order to proactively meet the requirements of our customers. The advanced mechanical properties of the new Bio-Compatible material, including clear transparency, bring benefits to the entire medical and dental workflow – from surgical planning through to the procedure itself,” explains Cohen.

Numerous dental laboratories are already using the new material and cite MED610’s™ durability and toughness as major upgrades. MED610™ has significantly reduced the dental restoration cycle. What once took five to seven days now only takes two to three days.
