Attention All Artists: Reverse Engineer Your Design From the Studio to Your Living Room

Date: January 05, 2012

Have you ever created a scaled down model of a project? Have you wondered how to expand that model to the proper size once completed?

3D Printers Canada now offers you the ability to use reverse engineering software along with post production software to scan and print your model to scale, in 3D.

“The 2D sketch of the sculpture was somewhat inspired by modern day tattoo art and also by fire itself,” says artist Frank Savage. He drew a flame (seen here) which he drew inspiration from modern-day tattoos and natural fire.

From this drawing, Savage creates an original sculpting a model with an aluminum rod and casting resin. A cast is made and molten aluminum is poured in and allowed to cool. After buffing and sanding, the model is finally completed – a process that takes upward of several weeks.

Savage could have designed his sculptures using 3D CAD software, all on screen. This time and cost effective method is revolutionizing the art industry.

Savage then laser scanned his flame and using reverse engineering, printed a larger, more polished model. We even offer direct metal laser sintering (DMLS).

“To maintain accuracy for objects like this sculpture without the reverse engineering process would be quite time consuming,” Senior Designer Greg Groth of Advanced Design Concepts (ADC) says. Groth says the whole process, from scanning the small model to rescaling it with software to printing it took about eight hours.

He estimates it would have taken 35 to 40 hours without the 3D reverse engineering process.

“Some of my pieces are rooted in machine art and pure form while others explore my emotions,” says Savage. “Regardless of size, it’s important that each buyer takes a unique piece from my studio to their living room.”
