Cycling Through Your Options

Date: December 19, 2011

Two world class innovators are teaming up to push the limits of cycling.

3D Printers Canada and Trek, a top-end bicycle producer, are rapid prototyping bike products.

“Our designers have a whole new world to work with for prototyping,” says Mike Zeigle, Manager of Trek’s Prototype Development Group. “Printing with Objet is much less time-consuming and more cost-effective than using our CNC machines for this purpose; it has reduced our prototype lead times from 4 weeks to just 1 day and in many cases to just hours. With the Objet Connex multi-material 3D printer our engineers can produce multiple design iterations, perfecting our design, way beyond what they could have done if we just relied on CNC parts.”

The speed of creation and accuracy of finished prototypes help save Trek money and time. A process that used to take 28 days now only takes one single day. The research and development process is now more hands on and any errors can be corrected faster and more effectively.

The new ABS-type material allows companies, like Trek, to use their bike prototypes immediately after construction in real life scenarios. This means in a matter of minutes a part can go from construction to installation to testing (on a bike).

Trek, who provided Lance Armstrong with his Tour De France wining bicycles, trusts Objet with any prototype testing. “We’ve got great examples of something that starts out as an Objet part, goes into a CNC part, is fabricated, and then goes on to either a world cup or championship level Trek bicycle, all made with an Objet part from the start,” explained Zeigle.
